What is GNM Nursing: (General Nursing and Midwifery).

               GNM is a diploma-level course, suitable for those who want to pursue a career in clinical nursing. Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai first started the training of midwives in India with 4 students in the year 1871. Students needs to clear class 12 with English and Science subjects in order to be eligible for GNM. 

              GNM is a training the students with specifically designed to become fully-fledged nursing professionals. It has a mixture of both theoretical and on-ground training for the students which helps them acquire basic skills.

                GNM Nursing course are divided into 3.5 years duration course (3 years of education and 6 months of mandatory internship).   • General Nursing and Midwifery program by appearing for state-level exams such as WBJEE ANM-GNM, Maharashtra GNM, Kerala GNM, etc. They must also have obtained the minimum number of marks required in their GNM Nursing Entrance Exam Result.

 

 

Types of GNM Nursing Course

              GNM Nursing course has 3 types that are most pursued in India are Basic, Post Basic, and Distance.

 

1. Basic GNM

            It is a most common type of basic GNM course, which is a 3.5 years bachelor's degree that helps to train students to require to gain more knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive nursing care to treat the patient with various types of diseases, is specially designed to make general nurses who are able to efficiently participate in the health team in various hospitals and other organizations.

2. Post Basic GNM

            Students in the post-basic GNM explore advanced knowledge, it can gain by classroom along with educational visits and clinical teachings. There is a good scope of post-basic GNM. Students can get jobs at nursing educational institutions, clinics, public health centers, etc. The duration of the basic version of this course lasts 3 years, whereas the regular version of this course lasts for 2 years.

 

3. Distance GNM

        Since GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery has a very limited scope for distance learning with highly technical profession, remote learning options are restricted. There is Students should be careful of universities that provide GNM via distance learning.

 

What is the GNM Nursing Course Fee?

The course fee for GNM Nursing course is variable in private and government colleges and institutions. The course fee for a General Nursing and Midwifery in government colleges is approximately INR 20,000 to INR 60,000 per annum, and for private colleges it is around 50,000-1,50,000 per year.

What is the Admission Process for GNM Nursing (2023)?

The admission process for the General Nursing and Midwifery programme is the student have completed their class 12 exams with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as compulsory subjects on the basis of marks secured by the students in class 12 exams. Colleges release a merit list on the basis of candidate’s performance in the 10+2 exam. 

Some of the institutes are conducted their own entrance exams for these courses or take students on the basis of state-level diploma entrance exams. By qualifying the entrance exams, the students will be eligible for admissions to the GNM course.
